Men and Fertility Treatment

There has been a steep rise in male infertility in the last 20 or so years. It is estimated that up to 35% of men have fertility problems, and 2% are infertile. It was once believed that mumps caused infertility in men, but this is now discredited.

Sperm quality and motility are the major issues for men and can be caused by a number of factors. Most men do not realize that the sperm they are using today was made and stored by the body up to 3 months age.

The quality of the sperm will be affected by overheating ( this is why the sperm is stored in the scrotum outside the body), an infection of the prostate may cause overheating, so may excess weight, hot baths, sitting for long periods, and over exercising in sports such as cycling.

Overworking/fatigue will cause loss of sperm quality, so will very frequent ejaculation, smoking and excess alcohol or drug taking.

More rarely anatomical defects can cause problems. If a couple is trying to get pregnant and nothing is happening, I would encourage all men to see there GP and have a sperm test  first

If you do have a problem it is possible that Traditional Acupuncture may help, I will also advise you about nutritional, and lifestyle changes to improve sperm.
